Question / Help OBS records audio and when i convert it Sony Vegas cannot open it

Hi,
thanks for looking at my thread, apologies if the title is confusing or not very useful as to show what I need help with but I shall explain in detail here.

Essentially when i record a video on a game and the file is saved to my video folder I cannot open that file with Sony Vegas. So i convert the file using third party software in order o acquire the video file and audio as separate files. This allows me to open the video in Sony Vegas perfectly fine. However, trying to open the audio or import it is another story, I can't seem to open it because Sony Vegas pops up with an error telling me it can't for whatever reason. The audo plays fine in other software and I can hear it fine. I checked the file type and it's .aac. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what file type it needs to be if it's the incorrect one, how i can convert it to that file type or record it as that file type. If anyone could help me it would be massively appreciated. I'm crazy new to video editing and recording and I'm learning as I go and I'd appreciate it greatly if anyone could give me some help here.

I'm not at my PC at the moment but if I remember correctly you need to go to the Recording tab and in the drop down box for the type of output choose mp4. The default is flv and Sony Vegas doesn't understand that container type.

Hi thanks dude that helped and fixed it lol was that easy. Problem now is I can open it in SV but i can't hear anything and there is no audio channel displayed. Any help on fixing that?
 
Potentially that sounds like you haven't got the audio tracks configured properly. In Settings, Output, Recording check to see which Audio Track(s) are selected. And then in Advanced Audio, (you get to this configuration by clicking the cog next to Mixer in the main OBS Window) check and see which devices are outputting to which tracks. One final thing is check that you are getting a signal in the mixer where you expect one, each active device will show a green bar to reflect the signal amplitude. If none of this helps then please do a new test recording and upload a new log for us to check out.
 
One thing I just noticed in my configuration is in the Advanced Audio settings make sure your Volume % is set to a sensible value. I just opened a recording in Sony Vegas and thought my game audio was missing, however I boosted the volume on the track all the way up to the highest value and I can now hear it even though there are no peaks on the audio track itself. I had the volume set to 11% :-)

Hi dude thanks for the responses they've been greatly helpful. Just about to test record to see if your suggestions have helped in the first paragraph. Regarding the second paragraph where you talked about advanced audio settings, was that in OBS or in SV? if it's in OBS i looked everywhere for the volume % option and couldn't find it. Unless you were talking about the audio settings in the mixer cog menu, if so I have adjusted accordingly. I'm going to test record now and will let you know how it goes, thanks very much yet again for your help much appreciated.
 
Here's my new log file, hopefully you can give me some heads up from that new one on what to change. Sorry if replies are late but I live in the UK and I'm in full time education so don't have a lot of time to reply or reply quickly.

Hi, sorry for the delay, UK based myself but been busy with work :-)

In your log file there is this entry:

[FFmpeg aac encoder: 'Track1'] bitrate: 320, channels: 2

When I do a recording I see this in the log:

[FFmpeg aac encoder: 'Track2'] bitrate: 320, channels: 2
[FFmpeg aac encoder: 'Track3'] bitrate: 320, channels: 2

So it makes me think that for some reason you are only writing one track as part of the recording. If possible can you share images of your Settings, Output, Recording tab? You should have two tracks selected here in the Audio Track section. Also post an image of your Advanced Audio Properties (Cog next to Mixer)

OK right that should all work, plus I was getting mixed up with another request on here that I was looking at :-) So let me just check. Now when you open in Sony Vegas you see both a video and an audio track but when you play you hear no audio is that correct?

I see a video track but no audio track, I decided to experiemtn and rendered the file and then reopened it after render and it opened with an audio track. However this contained no peaks but rather a flatline instead. thought i should let you know in cae it helps
 
sony vegas is incredibly sensitive to system codec configurations. if you've ever installed any codec packs, you're basically boned.

as a general rule, avoid codec packs. if you've already installed one, you might have to reformat and reinstall your system. uninstalling the codec packs won't work. there's probably a way to fix this by editing the registry, but i haven't be able to.
